Team Flower & Flower Friends

When I relaunched Whirly Girl Flowers in Sheridan, WY last year, I started looking for resources on growing my business and a community of fellow flower professions. Along the way I found Team Flower - a group of likeminded souls who encourage one another and provide numerous resources - professional training, workshops, free videos and an extensive blog.

Over the last year I’ve learned from the delightful Kelly Perry, participated in their growing online community and attended the first ever Team Flower Conference in Orlando, Florida last Spring.

During the conference we learned from industry professionals like the funny and talented ladies at Sweetroot Village in Washington D.C., watched demonstrations and I even got to meet a flower hero. One morning I sat down across from a face that seemed familiar but couldn’t place. When we introduced ourselves I just about jumped across to smother Susanne with a hug. We’ve been following each other on Instagram for years and it was a lovely surprise to meet her in person. Her little garden studio, called The Blue Carrot, is an inspiration and style instantly recognizable.

So much happiness meeting Susanne!

I made several new flowers friends from around the country during those few short days. Women who are funny and brilliant and doing amazing things with flowers in their community.

Katie from Posh Petals in Tuscon, AZ. We met before the conference even started when a group of us decided to hit the local grocery store for supplies and she was the only one with wheels. We were pretty much inseparable for the rest of the conference and even had a chance for a quick visit this summer.

The conference ended with a cocktail party under the palm trees and dinner surrounded by flowers. We laughed and learned more about our new friends and celebrated the thing that brought all of us together - FLOWERS! (Captured by Laura Foote Photography below! You can see more here.)

Following my time in Florida I connected online with a few other flower friends that I met but didn’t get to know very well at the conference. Kalin lives in Northern Michigan with her husband and two giant dogs on a lavender farm and rocks an incredible wedding season every summer on the lake. She’s become a favorite on my daily Instagram check for her wit and honesty.

This year I’ve invested more in my flower community by participating in a Team Flower Podcast and writting a few guest blog posts which you can find here. While most of these dear women are spread across the country we take advantage of modern technology and the occasional old fashioned card to encourage one another and learn new techniques.

A Long Love at Eaton's Ranch

Ginger and Todd love Wyoming and after years of vacationing here, they made the leap and moved last year. They decided to tie the knot at the historic Eaton’s Ranch with a weekend long celebration surrounded by family and friends. We planned on a long farm table decorated with a flower studded garland and a traditional round bouquet full of ruffled peonies and roses in shades of purple for the ladies.

I made a few cuff corsages with deep purple ranunculus and a traditional white rose boutonniere for the groom with a touch of lavender - a nod to their long time home in the midwest near a lavender farm.

Ginger requested traditional round bouquets in shades of white, lavender and purple with minimal greenery. It was a fun change from my wild and loose greenery bouquets and I LOVED them. For the bride I used pure white peonies grown in Colorado, white freesia, lavender roses and hellebores.

For their dinner in Howard Hall we lined the long table with garland and studded it with roses for dinner. The Cake Chix brought a gorgeous naked cake that we added greenery and a few flowers to along with their custom made spurs! We draped the old rock mantle with more greenery and a few small rose arrangements for a pop of color.

Denver Arranging Class

I grew up in Colorado along the Front Range and attended college in Ft. Collins, CO. While I haven’t lived in Colorado in over 15 years I still regularly travel home to see family and visit a few friends. After hosting a series of flower arranging classes in Sheridan, people were clambering for a chance to play with flowers in Colorado too!

The boy joined me for a weekend at his Auntie’s house with cousins and flowers.

I planned a casual Saturday afternoon class at the super cool Rocker Spirits in Littleton, CO. The guys opened up early for us, shoveled snow and served up some stellar cocktails while we played with some super bright and fun Spring flowers.

In an attempt to break free from the typical flowers found in February I went with punchy and bright oranges and yellows. Garden Roses in yellow, orange protea and crazy fun yellow Mimosa provided texture while tulips and stock provided bulk.

As we had the space completely to ourselves, we moved the tables around and guests choose a vase for making. Cocktails and flowers are a pretty great combo.

We had sisters, college friends, childhood neighbors and the world’s coolest aunt in attendance.

I highly recommend Rocker Spirits for a fun date night out & superb seasonal cocktail. If you’re in the greater Denver area go visit! Grab a bite from their food truck to pair with your drink!

I’m hoping this can be an annual event for us to gather, catch up on life and create something beautiful together. Who’s in for 2019? Make sure you’re signed up for our email list to stay in the loop and get notifications for future classes.

Intimate Family Wedding

Love comes at all times in life and is always worth celebrating. Julie and Smiley live in SD but planned a destination wedding in Sheridan where Julie raised her children. They were married at the Historic Sheridan Inn last March with their families and friends there to celebrate. We used lots of eucalyptus, classy calla lilies, succulents and sweet roses for the bouquets created by yours truly and DIY centerpieces put together by Julie and her daughters ahead of the party.

I’m always a fan of couples who make the day their own and love her skirt+denim combo.

I often try and fail to capture bouquets and flowers at home. Time is short or lighting isn’t ideal, the studio is a mess or I’m simply too tired after a day creating. I’m so grateful for the professionals I work with who capture details for me like Mandy with M.C. Picture Company!

I did happen to capture a few shots just before sending these beauties out the door and this little petite bouquet shot has been one of the most popular this year!

The perfect petite bouquet for the maids! Filled with three kinds of eucalyptus and a single gorgeous rose.

A prairie meets mountain wedding

These two grew up in Sheridan but fell in love while living on the East Coast. They came home for a celebration with their families and friends for a late summer wedding with a mountain and prairie theme. With lavender and dried prairies grass as our color scheme, I had free reign to bring in all the lovely textures August has to offer.

It was a treat to wander a piece of property owned by the bride's family and pick native grasses and other local greenery to mix into her bouquet. In all, the bridal bouquet featured over 20 different flowers, grasses and other greenery including lisianthus, Sahara roses and eucalyptus.

They hosted a sweet ceremony on the Polo Fields at the Big Horn Equestrian Center followed by dinner and dancing under the lights. Even with the heavy wildfire smoke in the background the day was a beauty.
